Plastic surgery has become a part of our society. Many people, not just the rich and famous, undergo some type of cosmetic plastic surgery procedure. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 6.6 million people had cosmetic plastic surgery in 2002. In that same year, the five most popular plastic surgery procedures were rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, and face lift. In a National Geographic article, Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, a world-famous plastic surgeon was quoted saying, ÓToday society accepts the improving of oneÒs image.

One of the contributions to the popularity of plastic surgery has been the advancements in technology and procedures. An example of this technology is now people can get an idea of the results of their plastic surgery even before undergoing surgery. According to an article in National Geographic (ÓThe Enigma of BeautyÔ January 2000), a patient went for a consultation regarding her facial plastic surgery and through computer imaging, she was able to get a preview of the results. Some surgeons offer computer imaging at their practice and some offer before and after photographs to show how much change they have done for their patients in the past.
